Presidency Confirms Release Of Another Chibok Schoolgirl


Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday confirmed that another Chibok schoolgirl has been found, barely 12 days after the release of 82 of the abducted girls by their captors.

Special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, who made this known to State House correspondents in Abuja yesterday said the recovery of the girl was announced by the acting president during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

According to him, the affected girl has been brought to Abuja to join 82 of her colleagues who were rescued from Boko Haram captivity.

Adesina said, “Yes, at the Federal Executive Council’s meeting, the Vice-President broke the cheering news to members of the cabinet and after that I have also spoken to defence people who confirmed it.

“The details are yet to fully unravel, but in terms of is it true- yes, it is true. I learnt she is already being brought to Abuja, but I have not seen her”.

The presidential spokesman expressed the hope that the remaining Chibok schoolgirls and other Nigerians in captivity would soon be rescued.

He also dismissed the assertion that members of the Boko Haram sect had started regrouping in Sambisa forest, saying that the federal government has the capacity to confront any security challenge arising from any part of the country.

He said, “One thing you can be sure of is that this government has the capacity to confront any security challenge that arises. So, if they are regrouping they will be flushed out again.

“I believe that we have seen the worst of that insurgency. We are in a mopping up process and I believe the mop up would be completed”.

‘Boko Haram Using IDPs Camp As Training Ground’

Meanwhile, theatre commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor has disclosed that the Boko Haram terrorists have converted internally Displaced Persons camps as recruitment ground for young boys and girls.

Irabor who disclosed this yesterday while receiving a souvenir presented to him by the Correspondents` Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Command and Control centre of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maimalari cantonment, Maiduguri also revealed that over 126 suspected Boko Haram terrorists who infiltrated IDPs camp in Damboa were arrested in the last one week.

The outgoing Theatre commander added that an intelligence report his troops gathered led to the arrest of one suspected Boko Haram element at the Damboa IDPs camp who participated in Boko Haram attack on military formation in Sabon Gari town of Damboa local government where six soldiers were killed and their weapons carted away.

His words: “ On apprehending the suspect we discovered an identity card of a soldier killed in the attack with his ATM card and when interrogated, the terroristst confessed that he actually participated in the attack and that a lot of Boko Haram elements have infiltrated the IDPs camp”.

He called on the general public to continue to cooperate with the security agencies until the Boko Haram elements are completely flushed out of the North-east and the country at large.
