Police in Kano State have arrested over 120 suspected homosexuals who also specialised in defiling young boys. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Magaji Musa Majiya, said the arrests were made within three months. According to him, the police are disturbed at the rising cases of sodomy and defilement in the ancient city of Kano while desperate measures have been adopted to tackle the menace.

He said: “We arrested no fewer than 124 suspected rapists and sodomites within three months from April to June in the state.” Majia, who paraded the suspects before journalists in Kano, said the police had recorded 115 cases of rape, sodomy and other acts of gross indecency within the period under review. The PPRO noted that 128 victims were involved in the crime while 124 suspects had been arrested.

He said 94 cases were charged to court, while 13 cases were under investigation. The PPRO, however, promised that the police would continue to do their best to curtail the situation, just as he appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers and other well-meaning Nigerians to join hands in fighting the social vices.

He said: “We are highly concerned about the rising profile of homosexuality among people in Kano, coupled with defilement of minors.” Majiya warned that anybody arrested the acts would face the full wrath of the law.
