Doctors Strike: More Patients Join Long Queues In Private Hospitals

By Taiwo Ogunmola-Omilani, Lagos –

Following the strike action embarked upon by resident doctors to compel the government to meet their demands, many patients are currently being moved from government owned hospitals in Lagos to the private hospitals to get

better treatment speaking with a staff of Lagos State University Hospital who spoke on condition of anonymity said nurses are merely going to work but could not  do anything without the availability of doctors. “We are just going to work just to make ourselves available but nurses are

handicap without  doctors. Patients are there hoping the strike would be called off this week”, she said.

LEADERSHIP checks showed that patients have been bearing the brunt of the strike in the General hospitals,  since the doctors attend to them are not enough.

In a chat with a staff of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) who is also a nurse, she said consultant doctors are presently on duty attending to patients and that nurses are busying working.

Our correspondent observed patients have besieged private hospitals like Ahmadiyya, Longing, Ore-Ofe hospitals amongst others.

Patients who also spoke at separate interviews appealed to the federal  government to as a matter of urgency end the strike, saying treatment in the government owned hospital are cheaper compared to private hospitals.

The doctors had embarked on industrial action demanding the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and downward review of their taxes, among other issues.
