A non-governmental group, League of National Patriots, has commenced a nationwide sensitization towards redirecting and positioning the Nigerian youth as activities towards the 2019 general elections approach.

The initiative, according to the acting national publicity secretary, Mr. Ayoola Oshodi, is part of the enlightenment that was kicked off in Ogun State recently.

The group stated that, as advocates of good governance and a better Nigeria, rather than sit back and complain about the economic woes and other major challenges facing the nation, time was ripe for the youth themselves to be partakers in politics by exploiting the opportunity that beckons through the recently passed ‘Not Too Young To Run Bill.’ They should also “strive to also form a determinant group that will bring in our next representatives and leaders even to the position of the president come 2019.”

“Rather than the present apathy  and disenchantment in the Nigerian political and electoral processes, the Nigerian youth must be reminded of their role not only in nation building by taking up challenges to either contest or support and bring in leaders and representatives that will cater and address their fundamental interests.”

The hallmark of the project is tagged, “My Voter’s Card My Power.” It is fashioned to ensure every youth within the voting age possess a valid voter’s card that will be the weapon or instrument of the struggle.

Ayoola argued further that “armed with their voter’s card with true resolve and the necessary consciousness of the numerical strength of the youths within the voting age across our various local and state levels no individual or party in their right senses will undermine their power and capacity.”

The group cautioned the youth on the implication of being used by desperate politicians as thugs and agents of election violence in exchange for money that will never improve their lives, saying: “they must learn to resist these crooked gestures and support peace, fair and credible electoral processes and transitions that will truly usher in good governance to our nation.”

The group, therefore, urged INEC “to create early opportunity and awareness for fresh registration and collection of voter’s card particularly female students who, recent research has clearly shown either do not have voter’s card or do not vote during elections.”

“This call, therefore, is a change of attitude that must be taken seriously so that this nation can truly be great,” the group added.
