To increase the level of awareness, initiate conversations on active citizenship, participatory governance and develop a plan for citizens education and engagement, the Center for Ethics and Sustainable Development (CESD) has called on the National Assembly to review the period within which information under the Freedom of Information Act may be disclosed from 7 to 14 days.

Executive Director, Center For Ethics and Sustainable Development, Olajumoke Akiode, who spoke while presenting the survey report on the ‘Evaluation of Public Perception and Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act,’’ said more than 85 per cent of Nigerians who desire to participate in advocacy do not know the importance of Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), as a result they cannot engage in open and participatory governance.

“Since the signing of the FOIA into law by former President Goodluck Jonathan, it has not been adopted by most states of the federation and has made little impact. There is need to create awareness about the existence of FOI Act, its benefits, full implementation and how it can impact on national development.”
