• Suspected fraudster attempts to escape from SCID

A forty-four-year-old man identified as Dupe Idahor has been killed by unknown gunmen at the burial ceremony of his mother, Deaconess Taiwo Albert.

The tragedy occurred at the weekend at No. 2, 4th Nosayaba Lane, off Nosayaba Street, off TV Road, Benin City, around 9:00 p.m.

He was said to be under a canopy with friends and relatives when the gunmen arrived in a car and opened fire on him.

After killing him, the armed men were said to have abandoned their operational vehicle, snatched another car belonging to the deceased’s friend and sped off.

The vehicle was abandoned but later recovered by the men of Textile Mill Police Division, a few meters away from the scene of crime.

It was learnt that the shooting forced family members to abandon the body of their 82-year-old mother, who was laid-in-state. They all scampered for safety.

A similar incident happened on Saturday, April 17, 2017, when unidentified gunmen killed a 35-year-old man, Bobby Usiobaifo, during the burial ceremony of his father, Pa. Abel Usiobaifo in Osariemen Street, Akagbosun area of Evbotubu, Benin City.

Meanwhile, it was another drama yesterday at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command, when a suspected criminal attempted to escape from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) around 10:15a.m.

The Guardian learnt that one of the two suspects brought into the command from Asaba, Delta State capital after a week-long man hunt, attempted to escape.

The suspects were said to have defrauded three persons of about N20 million.

The suspect was said to have freed his hand from the handcuff and ran into a nearby bush, near the Benin Owna River Basin Development Authority’s office, opposite the Office of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Policemen attached to the command gave the suspect a hot chase and with support from men of the DSS, he was apprehended.
