Yahaya Bello
The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has proscribed all forms of union activities in its tertiary institutions.
The governor disclosed this yesterday at a press conference in Government Lokoja, Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.
He mandated the management of the institutions to begin the process of employing other categories of workers required by the institutions based on compelling needs.
Bello charged the law enforcement and security agencies in the state to remain vigilant and be proactive in preventing a breakdown of law and order in any part of the state.
The governor had earlier banned the activities of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the state university at Anyigba, where over 135 lecturers were sacked and replaced.
He said: “Trade unionism has lent itself to impeding government’s efforts to carry out holistic reforms of the civil service in the state through unjustified and industrial actions.”
According to him, government respects the rights of all citizens to responsibly associate and pursue their welfare within the ambits of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Laws of Kogi State, as well as the rights of other citizens and the general norms of a democratic society.
