Participants at a one-day advocacy meeting organized by the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have called on the media to intensify efforts in creating awareness on the monkeypox outbreak, especially in the rural communities.
The communiqué issued at the end of the meeting with media chiefs/executives from 11 states, urged the media to be more aggressive in the reportage of the viral diseases and other health related issues. It also advocated for improved collaboration between government and the media in the reportage of the viral diseases and other epidemics.
In his remark at the occasion, UNICEF Health Specialist, Eghe Abe, who spoke on the topic, ‘Understanding the Epidemiology of MonkeyPox viral disease”, said though there was no vaccine for the disease now, it is preventable through proper hygiene.
Dr. Abe said it is important that stakeholders, including government, always update the media with information in order to increase their reportage of preventive measures, up-to-date and concise information on the emerging Monkeypox trend.
