President Mohammadu Buhari yesterday charged Muslim clerics and leaders to assist his administration’s efforts in fighting corruption by continuously preaching against menace.
The corruption war, he said could only be won through joint efforts by all Nigerians.
The President who spoke through his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojodu, also urged all Muslims to always pray for the survival of Nigeria.
Buhari spoke at the 55th Conference of League of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states.
The two-day conference, which brought together Imams and Alfas from the affected states is holding at the auditorium of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL).
One of the highlights of the event was the installation of former Minister of Mines and Steel, Chief Safara Tunji Ishola as the Baba Adinni of Yorubaland.
The President told the conference: “What is expected of you at this moment is to preach continuously against corruption in your mosque all the time.”
Buhari asked all public office holders to always remember that they are holding such office in trust for God and not for their selfish interest.
He expressed his deep appreciation to the Imams and Alfas for their continuous prayers for him “during my sicknesses”.
The President challenged the conference to come out with suggestions that would assist good governance at the end of their gathering.
The Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun who opened the conference commended the organisers, saying that for the members to be together for 55 years was commendable and worthy of emulation.
To him, the fact that the participants came from different States to deliberate on common purpose was an indication that Islam is a religion of unity.
He challenged Muslim leaders and Clerics to continue to propagate the Islamic religion, insisting that Islam is a religion of peace and love.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was one of the eminent persons that graced the occasion but did not talk.
The President-General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Mohammadu Sa’ad Abubakar and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, sent representatives to the conference.
Participants came from Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo and Delta states.
