Berom women protest cattle grazing on farmlands
Berom women took to the streets around Bisichi in Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State yesterday to protest against what they described as “illegal grazing” by herders on their farmlands.
The protesters dressed in black clothes blocked cattle routes, preventing herders from gaining access which prompted the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) Commander, Major General Rogers Nicholas, to visit the area and appeal for calm.
OPSH Media and Information Officer, Captain Umar Adam, told our correspondent that the women had complained that they were tired of illegal grazing on their farmlands but that the commander assured them that the state government would address their grievances.
Capt. Adam told our correspondent that as at 1pm, the area was calm and the women had returned to their homes.
Heads of security agencies in Plateau State, leaders of Berom and Fulani communities had three weeks ago met and drawn up a six-point declaration in Barkin Ladi that required all grazing routes to remain open while cattle owners are to pay for damages done to farmlands by their cattle. The agreement banned night grazing and assault on herders or their cattle.
