Chekwas Okorie raises alarm over rumours of military coup in Nigeria
Former presidential candidate of the UPP Chekwas Okorie says chief of army staff Buratai must make a public warning against any coup in the country– Okorie says nobody would be surprised that there could be some mischievous elements trying to pre-empt certain things about to happen– Okorie says the military should know that the amount of weapons in unauthorized hands is so enormousThe presidential candidate of the United Progressives Party (UPP) in the 2015 presidential election Chekwas Okorie has reacted to the worrying rumours of coup inNigeria. According to reports, Okorie warned against the alleged planned coup in the country, noting that any coup in the country might end time Nigeria.The former president candidate said: ‘’I am disturbed by the Chief of Army Staff ’s warning because I listened to Voice of America (VOA) and its report was more elaborate than what was reported by the local media.‘’What I gathered from the report was that there is an intelligence report that there are some moves within the military, which is suggestive of an impending military intervention.‘’And for the Chief of Army Staff to make a public warning in this regards is suggestive that something ominous is in the offing because the military and other security agencies are known to handle such matters secretly.‘’But here, it is a public warning. The VOA report even had it that some politicians have already been identified as being behind the disquiet within the rank and file of the military.‘’And watching recent altercations between some northern political leaders and their south western counterparts over Prof. Yemi Osinbajo’s as acting president”one would not be surprised that there could be some mischievous elements trying to pre-empt certain things about to happen.‘’This country has had the experience; where former Vice President Alex Ekwueme was tactically prevented from becoming president after his boss (President Shehu Shagari) had served out his tenure through a coup d’état.‘’That is recent history and so I am worried. But the military should know that the amount of weapons in unauthorised hands is so enormous that they (the military) do not have the luxury of being the only group in possession of weapons of mass destruction.‘’So, if they try anything; that would be the end of Nigeria. The era of martial music and everybody complying is gone. It is better we manage this democracy and drive it to a success.’’
