Again, Enyeama rejects Eagles’ return
Lille of France goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has rebuffed latest overtures to have him return to the Super Eagles after he declined to speak with the President of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki.
Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr, has not hidden his desire to have the goalkeeper return to the national team l a r g e l y because of the inc e s s a n t i n j u r y of first ch o i c e C a r l I k e m e and confidence i s s u e s b e i n g suffered by second choice, Daniel Akpeyi.
Rohr and some other Nigerians had made spirited efforts to prevail on the goalkeeper to cut short his international retirement but he remains adamant.
However, the Nigerian senate tried to wade into the situation and according to the chairman of the sports committee Obinna Ogba, the move is yet to yield results.
“Enyeama issue came up on the floor of the Senate and the Senate President made an attempt to talk to the goalkeeper.
I called him and the phone rang out, he didn’t pick the call, he probably didn’t know it was the Senate President that wanted to speak with him,” he said.
The former member of the Nigeria Football Federation said Enyeama was still relevant in the national team.
He said the goalkeeper’s wealth of experience would help the young team and provide temporary solution to the seeming Eagles’ goalkeeping problems.
Enyeama announced his retirement from the national team after he fell out with erstwhile Eagles’ coach Sunday Oliseh who stripped him of the captaincy of the team.
“The goalkeeper is unhappy with the role of the federation in the crisis and according to sources; this is why he is rejecting moves to return,” a source close to Enyeama told our correspondent.
